Hi everyone, their is much mystery in the Echo and why it exists, however there has been a post on the forums by Fernrawlhes to clarify any confusion caused by it:
Why the Video? In this video (Yes it's from 1.0, but much lore is actually hidden within this opening!!!) the Hyur joins his party at the table, choosing some Guildleves he gets taken back in time 10 years to witness a Guildleve others experienced, this was the Echoe's doing.
What is the Echo? The Echo is an ability most adventurers have who witnessed a starstorm, or in 2.0's case, the masked mage. The ability allows the beholder of the power to witness memories of the past as if they were actually there. They are able to interact and involve themselves in the memory, however, they cannot change the outcome.
[warning]This means you can speak of the story quests like you experienced them, in Roleplay, as Echo allows this, so don't let anyone tell you otherwise.[/warning]
What does this mean? This means your character can experience most things that could have taken years to witness, years of training in a matter of a shorter time. It can also be useful for quests which wish to cover the history of Eorzea and make for more interesting plots which make the most of the games lore.
Soul Crystals and the Echo Soul crystals are augmentations, which teach you lost arts, the soul crystals interact with your power of the Echo allowing you to become even stronger, for example without the Echo I would only be an Arcanist at best, but with the Echoe's aid, I am able to become a mighty Scholar who can utiliize the magicks of Faeries to bolster and hone the strength of their allies.
